What is IV hydration therapy?

IV hydration therapy is the intravenous delivery of fluids that can rapidly correct your body’s fluid depletion. It’s the most effective way to rehydrate your body safely.

It might seem like the simple solution to dehydration is drinking large quantities of water very quickly, but unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

When you drink a lot of water very fast, your kidneys have difficulty eliminating all that water, sometimes to the point that your blood sodium level drops dangerously low. But IV hydration includes both water and sodium chloride, which rehydrates your body quickly but in a safer way.

What symptoms can IV hydration treat?

IV hydration is an effective treatment for dehydration, which occurs when you don’t have enough fluids in your body. It can lead to some very uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Infrequent urination
  • Dry skin
  • Dark and odorous urine
  • Extreme thirst
  • Dry mouth

Dehydration can happen when you’re sick, injured, or overexert yourself because those are the times when you’re most likely to lose fluids through vomiting, diarrhea, or sweating heavily. You can also become dehydrated by drinking too little water or too much alcohol.

How does IV hydration therapy work?

IV hydration therapy happens in the Quality Health Source office. Dr. Johnson places a very thin tube into an arm vein, and you’ll sit or lay back in a comfortable chair for about 45 minutes as the IV solution enters your bloodstream.

You might feel a slightly cold sensation where the fluids enter your vein, but it’s not painful, and the sensation goes away after treatment. Some people experience a strange taste in their mouth during IV therapy, but it fades quickly.

After IV therapy, Dr. Johnson disconnects the fluids tube, and you can get back to your day. Many people feel significantly better once rehydrated, so IV hydration can be an excellent option if you’re struggling with the flu or another sickness that causes dehydration.

After restoring your body’s optimal fluid balance, you’ll usually be well on the road to recovery and won’t require further IV hydration. If you’re still experiencing dehydration-related issues, simply let Dr. Johnson know, and she can administer another IV therapy session or prescribe other treatments to help you bounce back faster.
