What is women’s health?

Women’s health is medical care matched to your female needs. It generally focuses on reproductive health but also includes other types of care that address your whole body.

All girls need women’s health care starting from ages 13-15. Keeping up with your regular women’s health care exams at Quality Health Source can help you recognize issues, treat them effectively, and confidently move through every phase of womanhood.

What happens during women’s health visits?

In women’s health visits at Quality Health Source, nurse practitioner Dr. Johnson generally does the following things:

  • Reviews your personal and family medical records
  • Discusses your current medications, including over-the-counter medicines
  • Performs a pelvic exam to check your reproductive organs (young girls might need only an external exam)
  • Performs a Pap smear (cervical cancer screening) and breast exam
  • Tests for Sexually transmitted disease (STD)
  • Discusses birth control and family planning
  • Helps you with current issues, like period irregularities, severe cramps, or menopause

Dr. Johnson may also recommend blood tests, like a complete blood count, to check for health problems like high cholesterol and high blood sugar. Depending on your risk factors and the results of those tests, you might need other types of tests as well.

If you’re 50-74 years old, Dr. Johnson gives you a referral for a mammogram to screen for breast cancer. You might need to start mammogram screening earlier (age 40-49) if you’re at elevated or high risk of developing breast cancer.

If you’re 65 or older, she may recommend a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, which checks your bones for signs of bone thinning (osteoporosis).

How often do I need women’s health care?

At Quality Health Source, Dr. Johnson usually recommends annual women’s health exams to monitor your health and treat any issues you have.

If you have new problems or need help with any issue between your yearly wellness exams, Dr. Johnson welcomes you to reach out for help. In many cases, she can handle your needs through telehealth visits from the privacy of your own home.

Women’s health care works best when you have an experienced female care provider to whom you can relate to, and that’s why so many women trust Dr. Johnson at Quality Health Source. Click on the online booking feature or call the office to make your appointment.
